Powerplay in Cricket Explained: T20 and ODI Fielding Restrictions

The powerplay is the stretch of overs when the fielding side faces restrictions on where fielders can stand. It gives batters more room to attack.

T20 powerplay

In T20 cricket the powerplay is the first six overs. At most two fielders may stand outside the 30 yard circle.

ODI fielding restrictions

In a 50 over match, overs 1 to 10 allow two fielders outside the circle, overs 11 to 40 allow four, and overs 41 to 50 allow five.

Why it matters

Teams often score their fastest runs early because the field is spread thin, and bowlers who take wickets in the powerplay can take control of the whole innings.

Tests

Test matches have no powerplay.
